However, a sinister extension to this technology, appropriately named ‘deepfake’, can recreate anyone’s voice and video with unprecedented accuracy and can be used to project fake identities of influential people to create anarchy, distrust and political polarisation. Bad, bad stuff!

Dr Ayesha Ali from the LUMS Economics Department and Dr Ihsan Ayyub Qazi and Dr Agha Ali Raza from Computer Science has just won the prestigious Facebook Research Award that puts us in the right spot to develop and test our in-house deepfake-busting technology.
On Monday 24th September 2019 Mr Malik Amin Aslam, advisor to the prime minister on climate change delivered a talk on “Climate Change Challenges for Pakistan” at Lahore University of Management Sciences. The talk was aimed at introducing the audience with the threats, challenges and solutions for climatic changes taking place at the national and international scale. Mr Aslam briefed on how the climate changes are adversely affecting the economy and the environment in Pakistan. He outlined how the federal and municipal governments are acting to mitigate the effects of climate change.
Mr Aslam emphasized on the role of public-private partnership in combating the challenges posed by the rapidly changing climatic situation across the globe and in Pakistan. The talk was attended by a large number of viewers which included students of LUMS, students from other academic institutions, environmental activists and member of the civil society. A substantial number of representatives from media houses were also present on the occasion.
Dr. Akhtar Munir, the 5th PhD graduate from the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE) has made significant progress in the development of highly effective catalysts that aid the production of hydrogen from water.
Traditional energy sources such as gasoline, diesel, natural gas, and other fossil reservoirs are not only diminishing but also leave a colossal carbon footprint, causing severe damage to the environment. Therefore, scientists across the globe have been striving to uncover alternate and renewable energy resources - which is why Dr Munir’s findings hold immense significance.
