Interactive Awareness Session Held on World Hepatitis Day

The Office of Human Resources, in collaboration with Campus Health, organised an interactive awareness session to observe World Hepatitis Day on Tuesday, August 1, 2023. The session focused on the theme for 2023, "We're Not Waiting," aiming to raise awareness about the symptoms, transmission, and preventive measures for various types of hepatitis. The session commenced with opening remarks by Mr. Tariq Sheikh, Director Campus Health, who shared the LUMS' vision for initiating health programmes in the upcoming year. Guest speaker, Dr. Muhammad Asif Gul, gastroenterologist and hepatologist from Farooq Hospital, delivered a comprehensive overview of the different types of hepatitis, emphasising the paramount importance of vaccination as a preventive measure. He presented compelling statistics, revealing that a staggering 4.55 million individuals suffer from Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and an alarming 8.74 million from Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) in Pakistan. During the discussion, participants learned about the distinct symptoms of each type of hepatitis and gained insights into the potential sources of transmission, such as the reuse of contaminated toolkits. Dr. Gul addressed preventive measures, including maintaining personal hygiene, using new and sterile syringes, and opting for boiled water to safeguard against infection.

Office of Research at LUMS Hosts Awareness Session on Intellectual Property

The Office of Research (OR), in collaboration with the Technology and Innovation Support Centre (TISC) at LUMS and the National Incubation Centre at LUMS (NICL), organised an event to highlight the importance of intellectual property (IP) within academic and research communities. Held on July 11, the event was organised in partnership with the Intellectual Property Organization (IPO) Pakistan. Guest speaker, Mr. Farrukh Amil, Chairperson, IPO Pakistan, delivered a lecture titled, "Understanding the Role of Intellectual Property to Promote Innovation and Entrepreneurship." His conversation aimed to educate attendees about how IP can facilitate innovation and entrepreneurial endeavours. During the event, Mr. Amil engaged with startups, discussing how they can leverage IP to gain a competitive edge, expand into new markets, grow their businesses, forge partnerships, and secure funding. This interaction provided valuable insights and guidance for aspiring entrepreneurs, emphasising the significance of intellectual property in driving their ventures forward.

In Conversation with Dr. Ghazal Mir Zulfiqar, Awardee Vice Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence 2022-23

Known for cultivating intellectual curiosity and promoting holistic well-being among her students, Dr. Ghazal Mir Zulfiqar, Associate Professor of Management Sciences, Suleman Dawood School of Business, is an extraordinary faculty member at LUMS. What makes her an excellent teacher is her ‘ethics of care’. Deeply committed to educational leadership and student advising, her multidisciplinary approaches while teaching policy and research methods encourage healthy debate and co-learning. As expressed by one of her students, “It takes real courage to open yourself to students and invite them to engage in discussions as collaborators and teach them that their lived experience, their concerns about the world, and their interpretations are equally solid and hold value.” Dr. Zulfiqar’s dedication to education is truly commendable. She cancelled her sabbatical this year because she could not imagine not being with her students for an entire year or even a semester. As one of her students commented, “Conversations with her during office hours often required a lot of emotional labour on her part, which she did for hours on end, twice a week, during the semester for everyone in our class.” We sat down with her to learn more about her teaching philosophy, her thoughts on winning the award and what motivates her.
