LUMS continues to be at the forefront of research and discovery. Tariq Lab at LUMS, a pioneering epigenetics lab in Pakistan and the only fruit fly lab in the country, has discovered over 200 new genes which are involved in the maintenance of cell identities. These results are reported in a recently published article from Tariq Lab in the Epigenetics and Chromatin journal. This is the first time such cutting-edge work in this field has been accomplished in Pakistan, which has direct implication in the field of cancer biology and regenerative medicine.
A two-day follow-up training workshop for the officer and engineering professionals of DISCOs (Distribution companies) was arranged on January 7, 2022 under the banner of Power Sector Centre of Excellence (PSCE) established at LUMS in Lahore. PSCE is a training and knowledge hub founded jointly by CPPA-G (Central Power Purchasing Agency) and LUMS Energy Institute (LEI). The training was attended by 80 participants comprising of officials from Distribution Companies (DISCOs), National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC), National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) and CPPA-G. This Module-II was a continuation of Module-I of the course, where the detailed methodology of Medium-term Demand Forecast (MTDF) was explored. Participants were also given intensive knowledge about the Power Market Survey (PMS) tool used to gauge bottom up demand forecasting, acknowledged for providing high accuracy for medium-term demand forecasting around the world.
The central topic of the school is the mutual interaction of algebra, combinatorics and geometry. Objects of research in algebraic geometry are affine as well as projective varieties and their associated invariants which can be studied using methods from algebra and combinatorics. Toric and tropical varieties are instances where such kind of approaches were and still are very successful. In discrete geometry cones, graphs, hyperplane arrangements and matroids are examples of research subjects which naturally play prominent roles in algebra and discrete mathematics.
