However, a sinister extension to this technology, appropriately named ‘deepfake’, can recreate anyone’s voice and video with unprecedented accuracy and can be used to project fake identities of influential people to create anarchy, distrust and political polarisation. Bad, bad stuff!

Dr. Ayesha Ali from the LUMS Economics Department and Dr. Ihsan Ayyub Qazi and Dr. Agha Ali Raza from Computer Science, have just won the prestigious Facebook Research Award that puts us in the right spot to develop and test our in-house deepfake-busting technology.
Dr. Akhtar Munir, the 5th PhD graduate from the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE) has made significant progress in the development of highly effective catalysts that aid the production of hydrogen from water.
Traditional energy sources such as gasoline, diesel, natural gas, and other fossil reservoirs are not only diminishing but also leave a colossal carbon footprint, causing severe damage to the environment. Therefore, scientists across the globe have been striving to uncover alternate and renewable energy resources - which is why Dr. Munir’s findings hold immense significance.
The Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering believes in the concept of “no boundaries” where faculty members from different fields can team up and unearth novel solutions to prevailing scientific questions.
The field of cancer research provided a similar opportunity for the research groups of Dr Rahman Shah Zaib Saleem (Department of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering) and Dr Amir Faisal (Department of Biology). The two groups have been working together in preparing novel organic compounds and evaluating their anticancer potential with a focus on overcoming multidrug resistance (MDR), a major problem limiting the success of cancer therapeutics. In this regards, the team has published their latest article titled, 'Synthesis and evaluation of novel α-substituted chalcones with potent anti-cancer activities and ability to overcome multidrug resistance' in the journal Bioorganic Chemistry.
