Academic Year Review: Dr. Alnoor Bhimani

Honorary Dean SDSB, Dr. Alnoor Bhimani, recaps the past academic year at Suleman Dawood School of Business.

"This academic year marks a major transition at the Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB).  Following the accreditation of the business school in 2019 by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, we have mobilised some key changes and initiatives.   SDSB has revised its strategy to focus on the development of ideas and people to shape business and society.   This places the business school at the interface between academia and society with a firm and explicit social commitment. It also positions SDSB among the most forthright globally in committing to a mission that is much wider than the pursuit of pure economic growth.

Beyond simply articulating its mission, how is the business school operationalising its aspirations?   A major initiative is the launch of the three new Master of Science programmes in Fall 2020.  These are one-and-half year programmes in the fields of healthcare management and innovation, technology management and entrepreneurship, and business and public policy.  These represent key priority areas where the deployment of educated individuals with the right level of expertise can help power the country’s growth.  The decision to inaugurate three new graduate degrees simultaneously is an audacious move, but it is dictated by the need to respond to the immediate requirements for SDSB trained students in critical sectors of the economy.

No Borders Teaching and Learning Workshop for LUMS Faculty

Faculty and graduate students from all five LUMS schools congregated at the Suleman Dawood School of Business to participate in a week long ‘No-Borders Teaching and Learning Workshop.’

The workshop was organized from January 13-17, 2020 and led by renowned international professors, Dr. J. B. Kassarjian (Professor of Management, Babson College, USA and Professor Emeritus, Strategy and Organization, IMD, Switzerland) and Dr. Joseph M. Pons (President, AXIOMA Marketing Consultants, Spain and Professor of Marketing at IESE Business School and IEDC-Bled School of Management). The unique interactive style of teaching made for a transformative experience for all those who attended.

The event was inaugurated by Rector LUMS, Mr. Shahid Hussain, and Vice Chancellor LUMS, Dr. Arshad Ahmad. Rector LUMS' underscored a University wide commitment to being at the forefront of learning and teaching. The Vice Chancellor encouraged faculty to continue availing the opportunities provided by the University in order to grow as educators, “We have to think about progress in terms of solutions and not just hope it will happen by sticking to the status quo. We have to disrupt ourselves; the true meaning of development and growing as individuals but also as a collective”, he said.
